IRS Tax Issues
One thing is constant with the IRS. That one constant is
the inconsistent treatment of taxpayers. One taxpayer will get lucky and
never get caught not filing, not paying, or both. His neighbor, however
might find himself being prosecuted for not filing and/or not paying for only a
couple of years. Why?
Because the IRS is merely a lot of people trying to do
what they think is a good job. The numbers of IRS employees is vast,
the rules are complicated and contradictory. This combination mixes into
the unfair and inconsistent treatment we all complain about, yet live with every
year.
Let me cover a few things that you need to know if the IRS
claims you have UNFILED RETURNS OR UNPAID ASSESSMENTS.
-
You are in danger of losing your pay, your bank funds, your
accounts receivables and your other property, even if the IRS is
wrong! If you keep your money in a bank, credit union, brokerage,
etc., get ready to lose it.
-
You cannot get reasonable treatment from the IRS unless you
are in compliance with filing requirements. If the IRS says they don't
have your return, find your copies and file them again.
-
Do not ignore Certified Mail ever! It doesn't matter
if the IRS didn't get it delivered, only that it was sent! A few days
after sending a couple of notices, you can be levied legally.
-
Do not talk to the IRS without professional advice.
You will be tricked, intimidated, lied to, and otherwise treated
unfairly. Talk to a professional, me or someone like me, to seek
counsel on whether you should handle it yourself. Do not worry about
being sold something you do not need. Most of us are busy enough
without resorting to that tactic. The good professionals are truly
dedicated to helping taxpayers get out from under the IRS burden.
-
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to reduce or
extinguish the amount claimed through a variety of legal and ethical
maneuvers with the IRS.
-
THE IRS DOESN'T CARE IF YOU PAY OR DON'T PAY. They
just want to close your case and get to the next one. That is why they
are willing to compromise, extend deadlines, etc.
-
NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU THINK IT IS, I HAVE SOLVED WORSE
PROBLEMS THAN YOURS. Some of my clients owed millions, some were in
jail
